Enrichment

Winter 2010

Students in the 2nd Grade Enrichment class have been reading a variety of stories from the Jr. Great Books series.  Stories include, “How the Camel Got His Hump”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Arap Sang and the Cranes”, “The Magic Listening Cap”, “The Jack and the Partridge”, “Nail Soup”, “The Apple of Contentment”, and other stories.  This year’s class enjoys drawing, so we have followed up several of the stories with a variety of drawing activities.  We plan to put together a presentation in the spring for the entire 2nd grade class.

Students in the 4th Grade Enrichment class have been studying the South and the many products, services, and places of interest the Southern states provide.  Our class had been involved in a brain storming session to generate a list of 100 words including places, animals, events, and other topics relating to the South.  The students are currently writing a story using several of their 100 words.  The next topic of study will be the Midwest.

The 5th grade is joining the middle school in a study of Greek mythology.  The class was engaged in a preliminary activity where several of the prominent gods and goddesses were discussed.  Each student made a booklet of the mythological characters to help them follow the plot more easily when they read “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief”.  The 5th grade has enjoyed listening to several non-fiction books, including “George Washington Carver”, and “Where Lincoln Walked”.  The class was also excited to achieve their goal of reading 100 books by the 100th day of school.

The 6th – 8th grade classes have been studying Greek mythology and reading the Percy Jackson series.  The 6th grade class has been engaged in a creative activity they will be sharing with the upper grades.  The activity is “top-secret” so we’ll wait till the next newsletter to share the details.  The 8th grade is also enhancing their reading of “The Titan’s Curse” by reading researching and presenting further information on “The Hoover Dam”.  Our school Olympics program has also presented a challenge to read 500 books during the Olympics.  The 6th-8th grade students will have the opportunity to read higher level picture books on Monday and Wednesday afternoons in the Enrichment room to help reach the goal.
