Welcome to Harpdom! |

Welcome to Harpdom! I advise all King’s fifth graders as they enter the magical kingdom of Harp to be here every day. Why? You never know what’s going to happen and you wouldn’t want to miss a thing. I grade papers in green ink emphasizing the number correct to encourage continued effort. Early on, I’ll hear “But how many did I get wrong?” I tell them that I’m more interest in how many were right. Wednesday’s spelling pretests are recorded with success in mind. If a student reports that they spelled just a few of the twenty correct, I respond that it’s better than none. If any of the spellers Ace Monday’s study test, they can just glide past go, put their marbles in the container, and skip Wednesday’s final. It’s always refreshing to hear the end of Harpdom observations. One of my favorites came from a child who always had school in perspective. Referring back to his first days in fifth grade, he reminded me about the “be here everyday” mantra. He asked if I ever knew what’s going to happen. Neat, huh? We shared a hearty laugh over that astute observation. |
